Here are some things that I've done in gimp. I've tried to include a xcf file (gimp's native format), and a picture.

Door Label
We just bought a unit, and have a door bell, so I thought I'd make up a nice label:

I added a 3 pixel wide border that is not in the xcf, this was so I could cut it out the right size. I made the image to be 600 DPI, which was a bit of a mistake, it should have been 720 (native for my printer), but still looks pretty good.

To get the size, I got the old door label, and measured it with a tape measure as accurately as I could (81mm x 14mm). Then when you select New Image in Gimp, just change the Width/Height to "mm" and enter the size. I changed the resolution to 600.

I printed it on my printer using:

lp.cups -o ppi=600 -o position=top-left -o media=A4 doorlabel.jpg
This is due to an on-going saga of trying to get my printer work with gimp (here).

Key Label
You know the labels that go on your keys, in a plastic cover? Well my label is 37mm x 20.5mm. Double that to get size of the image (front and back, fold in half.

I copied the exact size of the label that came out of the key chain, but probably I should have made it a little larger...
lp.cups -o ppi=720 -o position=top-left -o media=A4 keylabel.jpg
